Footnotes

  • Coventry-based Armstrong-Siddeley Motors Ltd. resumed motor car manufacture very soon after the war with an elegant and superbly engineered range of cars built in the best vintage traditions, but nevertheless adopting up-to-the-minute engineering refinements. Arguably their most elegant offering was the Hurricane Drophead Coupe, with a folding three-position hood, enabling the car to be used in the Coupe-de-Ville position or as a full open tourer. The body construction used traditional ash and aluminium methods and interior appointments were of the highest order with leather upholstery and best quality carpets. Power was provided by a six-cylinder engine of 1,991 cc, in the case of this car driving through a manual gearbox, although a pre-selective box was an option. Top speed was in the order of 75mph for the 16hp cars and petrol consumption about 20 mpg. The Armstrong-Siddeley marque was not inexpensive but had earned a loyal following over 25 or so years of manufacture up to 1946. It appealed to the professional classes who preferred a more bespoke carriage. In all some 2,606 or so Hurricanes were manufactured.

This car was acquired some 25 years ago, later dismantled and sent to noted restorers A.B.Price Ltd. for a chassis-up restoration, embracing chassis, engine, body, hood, coachwork, wiring, instrumentation, upholstery and carpets. The work commenced in 1990 and was finally completed by Will Sparrow in 2003, total bills, most of which are available for inspection, amounting to approximately £60,000. Following completion of the restoration the car took part in the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts’ Club Tour of Jordan. At an Armstrong-Siddeley Owner’s Club event post restoration the car was judged best Hurricane and second overall.
This most elegant motor car is strikingly presented in cream livery with red leather upholstery and comes with hood cover, jacks, a comprehensive tool kit and a photographic record of the rebuild. Remarkably it comes also with a spare Hurricane for parts. The car is Swansea registered on a V5C, currently licensed and MOT tested.
The car comes to the market only because the owner is moving abroad.
