Footnotes

  • Charles Minshall, President of the Standard Wheel Co. of Indiana, engaged the newly graduated Claude Cox to head the design team of his newly formed motor car manufacturing business in late 1902. Production developed logically from single to twin to four cylinder cars in the period 1903 to 1905, with Cox observing, but not necessarily following, the contemporary designs of Messrs Cadillac, Ford and Oldsmobile. Financial traumas resulted in John North Willys taking over the manufacture of the Overland, producing cars briefly in a circus tent and finally putting the company on a firm and fast-growing footing. During the period 1910-1914 production centred exclusively on four cylinder cars with Overland competing for the same market as Henry’s remarkable Model ‘T’ Ford. In 1912 Overland production figures recorded 28,572 cars leaving the production line. For the 1912 season Overland offered four different models of which the 60 was the second largest and rated at 35hp.

This example was discovered in unrestored condition and reported in The Automobile magazine in March 1984. The car was originally registered in Manchester and the original number was reallocated by the DVLA during the course of restoration. This car comes with a highly comprehensive and most impressive file recording all details of the restoration. It also comes with an original parts price list and a wealth of other Overland information and documentation.

The car is offered from private ownership and is very smartly presented in maroon and black livery with black buttoned leather upholstery and excellent weather equipment, including hood and hood envelope and two-piece tonneau cover. It benefits from an electric starter and has a later alternator fitted. As well as four conventional seats, two occasional seats are provided for extra passengers. Prospective buyers are strongly recommended to read in detail the restoration file which shows the meticulous lengths undertaken to achieve a car of outstanding reliability and touring capability.

This handsome and practical Edwardian tourer is offered with a Swansea V5C registration document, current road fund licence and MoT certificate, Veteran Car Club Dating Certificate and VSCC buff form.
