Footnotes

  • Touring car racing has always been an important showcase for motor manufacturers, and the introduction of the 2.0-litre formula (later ‘Super Touring’) in the UK in 1991 would prove to a most important development, encouraging an unprecedented level of factory participation. In the new formula’s debut season, BMW, Ford, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota and Vauxhall were all represented, with Peugeot and Mazda swelling the ranks in 1992. Existing racing teams and selected dealerships were the usual method of involvement, Ford’s comeback effort with its new Mondeo saloon being entrusted to Andy Rouse’s RouseSport company for the 1993 season. Powered by a Cosworth developed, 24-valve V6 engine, the Mondeo enjoyed a wider track than any of its rivals, an attribute that enabled it to ride the kerbs better than other front-drive cars. New Zealander Paul Radisich scored his, and the Mondeo’s, BTCC debut victory at Brands Hatch and went on to win the season-closing FIA Touring Car Challenge at Monza. Despite the Mondeo’s late arrival, Radisich finished 3rd in the 1993 BTC Championship, a result he repeated the following year.
Dick Bennett’s West Surrey Racing took over as works team in 1995. Radisich and Kelvin Burt were the drivers, the former finishing 6th in the Championship while Mondeo independent Matt Neal secured the Privateers’ Cup. Reynard Racing Cars’ Special Vehicle Projects division was entrusted with Ford’s works BTCC effort from 1997, but serious success continued to elude the Mondeo until the 2000 season, when Alain Menu, Anthony Reid and Rickard Rydell finished in that order at the head of the Championship.
This Mondeo Touring Car was built by West Surrey Racing and used initially in the UK, although by which team is not known. Subsequently it was campaigned by Ford Sweden in the Swedish Touring Car Championship and driven by Matthias Ekstrom, later a works driver for Audi and DTM Champion in 2003. The car was sold by ex-World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist to David Sutton four years ago. In running order at that time, it has been on museum display ever since and will require the customary safety checks and re-commissioning prior to further use. We are advised that a quantity of spare parts is available, to include body panels and wheels.
