Footnotes

  • This is one of the sister pair of 3-litre Cosworth-Ford V8-powered Formula 1 March cars to be offered by us here at Stoneleigh – a car ideal for a private owner to campaign within the relevant Historic Formula 1 category which has gained such widespread interest and support not only here in the UK, but also throughout Europe and the USA.
This particular car – chassis serial ‘RM11’ – was driven by the popular German star Jochen mass in the 1982 Dutch GP, it finished 10th in his hands in the British GP and was also used at Hockenheim before the German GP before being allocated to British driver Rupert Keegan for the Austrian, Swiss and Italian GPs. RAM Racing’s Brazilian driver Raul Boesel then finished 13th with this car in the Caesar’s Palace GP at Las Vegas, USA. The car passed subsequently into Historic Formula 1 racing in 1984, being driven by John Brindley to win at Brands Hatch and to finish second twice at Donington Park and once at Snetterton – thus proving the car’s potential for that category of enthusiast racing.
March Engineering Ltd was created in 1969 by entrepreneur Max Mosley, former driver/team manager Alan Rees, production expert Graham Coaker and leading Formula 1 and sports-racing car designer Robin Herd. Their aim was to provide chassis for customer sale which could compete in Formula 1, 2 and 3 in addition – subsequently – not only to sports and endurance racing but also to contemporary USAC and later CART Indycar competition.
After their prototype Formula 3 car had shown great promise, driven by Ronnie Peterson, in 1969, the company leapt immediately into Formula 1 in 1970, supplying the March 701 chassis (designed by Herd) to the Tyrrell team for Jackie Stewart and Johnny Servoz-Gavin, to STP for Mario Andretti and Jo Siffert and to Antique Automobiles or Ronnie Peterson. Stewart gave March its first F1 victory in the non-championship Race of Champions that March and followed up with victory in the Spanish GP. Amon won the International Trophy and the extraordinary March story was on a roll.
It carried Peterson to second-place in the 1971 World Championship and introduced Niki Lauda and James Hunt to this pinnacle level of motor racing. It dominated Formula 2 for many years, together with Formula 3 and Atlantic.
But finance was always hard to find to underpin a front-running Formula 1 programme, and after Peterson shone for the Bicester team again by winning the 1976 Italian GP at Monza, success was hard to achieve. At the end of the 1977 Herd and Mosley sold their F1 team's assets to Gunther Schmid of the German ATS wheels business, and Mosley left March to concentrate upon Formula One Constructors’ Association business. Herd’s Indycar March 81C won twice in 1981, five times in 1982 and seven times in 1983 (including Indy ‘500’) so there was no doubting the marque’s inherent class. Further Indy ‘500’ wins followed in 1984-85-86-87 and the company won CART titles with Al Unser in 1985 and Bobby Rahal in 1986.
In 1981 March returned to F1 in a joint venture with John MacDonald and Mick Ralph’s RAM Racing organisation. RAM hired young engineer Adrian Reynard to perfect their cars. For 1982 sponsorship was secured from Rothmans, Rizla and Newsweek and Jochen Mass and Raul Boesel became team drivers. The 811 was heavily revised but Pirelli tyres were withdrawn from RAM leaving them to race on Avon instead.
This attractive 3-litre Cosworth-Ford V8 powered Formula 1 car is offered here after many years in a careful and attentive American ownership.
