Footnotes

  • This well-presented late-model Brabham single-seater racing car is offered here in 1.6-litre Formula Atlantic specification suitable for participation in the European Formula 2 Trophy series and the Derek Bell Trophy. It is offered here in ready-to-run condition and it is accompanied by comprehensive FIA documentation.

The Ron Tauranac-masterminded series of Brabham racing cars built for customer sale between 1962 and 1972 is rightly renowned today for its magnificent record of competition success. Brabham cars in period were beautifully built and extremely robust, yet competitively light in weight and renowned for their driveability and outstanding handling qualities. Sir Jack Brabham himself retired from driving at the end of the 1970 season. During his glittering Formula 1 career from 1955-1970 he had won the Drivers’ World Championship no fewer than three times (in 1959, 1960 and 1966), and he had also excelled in Formula 2, sports and even saloon car racing. Even during his retirement season in 1970 – at the age of 44 – he came very close to securing a fourth Formula 1 World Championship title, winning the South African Grand Prix ahead of “all the kids like Jackie Stewart and Jochen Rindt” (!) and only losing both the Monaco and British GPs on the very last corner, on the very last lap!

His long-time business partner and Brabham car designer Ron Tauranac continued their Motor Racing Developments Ltd company’s production of customer racing cars into 1971, when the BT35 model as offered here was introduced. Three different variants were offered. The BT35A was tailored for American SCCA competition, featuring 4-cylinder Cosworth-Ford BDA engines, a Hewland FT200 gearbox and inboard rear brakes. The BT35B was the sister Formula Atlantic version with 4-cylinder Lotus-Ford twin-cam engine and outboard rear brakes, while the BT35C – the most prolific model, of which 27 are understood to have been produced - complied with International Formula 3 regulations and which used a Hewland Mark 8 gearbox.

The FIA papers accompany this BT35 indicate that its first owner was British Formula Atlantic competitor Nick Cook, 1971-73, from whom it passed to Rob Turnball (sic) 1973-75, Andrew Frazer 1975-84, David McLaughlin 1984-87 and to Keith Norman 1987-89. During this period the car is listed as having competed in Formula Atlantic, American Formula B, Formule Libre, sprints and hill-climbs and ultimately Historic events. It then passed to Rob Haze in Eindhoven, Netherlands, before returning to this country in 1991, where it has been owned and campaigned by Keith Norman until 2001, Peter Tyer 2001-2004 and since then by the present vendor.

The engine has been built and prepared by Neil Roper, developing 220bhp upon the dyno in 2005, and the five-speed Hewland FT200 transaxle gearbox was freshly rebuilt by BPA Engineering since which time it has been used in only two races. Overall condition of chassis, bodywork and electrics, etc is self-evident and we recommend would-be Historic single-seater racers to consider this most handsome and attractive car – a fine example of Brabham at the marque’s best. This Lot is accompanied by contemporary photographs and relevant press cuttings.
