Footnotes

  • This Grantura MkIII underwent a ‘ground up’ rebuild to FIA-legal competition specification by David Gerald TVR Sportscars Ltd between 2002 and 2006. Founded in 1982, David Gerald is one of the UK’s largest TVR dealerships and fulfils a unique role as factory-licensed provider of parts for all pre-1980 TVRs throughout the world.
A left-hand drive model delivered new to the USA (as confirmed in writing by TVR), this car was acquired by the vendor in 2002. Its superlative specification is far too lengthy to list fully here but is available for inspection. Highlights include a new MIG-welded chassis manufactured by David Gerald with reinforced suspension mounts to original design and front/rear tow hooks. The original bodyshell and doors - the former made to bolt on with lowered floors for improved driver space - are complemented by new lightweight inner wings and bonnet. Front and rear suspension are to original design, featuring new double wishbones, uprights, trunnions, ball joints and polyurethane bushes. Camber, track and toe-in are adjustable, while the (rate/height) adjustable Spax dampers feature up-rated springs. Operated via a Tilton twin master cylinder, the bias-adjustable non-servo braking system features non-vented discs at the front gripped by Girling 44mm single-pot calipers on alloy brackets, with drums at the rear and braided hoses throughout.
TVR used the MGB’s 1800cc BMC B-Series engine in the later MkIIIs and this car’s has been rebuilt with all new main/big-end bearings and +0.040” pistons and rings. The crankshaft is fully dynamically balanced and fitted with a lightened flywheel, while the new valves in the HRG Derrington aluminium cross-flow cylinder head are opened by a Piper BP320 race cam. Fuel is delivered from the foam-filled tank (with roll-over valve) by a Facet electric pump to new twin 40DCOE Weber carburettors. The dynamometer-tested maximum of 126bhp (flywheel) is transmitted via an AP racing clutch, MGB 3-synchro non-overdrive gearbox and 3.9:1 ratio MGA differential (in correct TVR alloy casing) to Compomotive 15.00”x6” alloy wheels shod with new Yokohama 195/55 A0048R medium-compound tyres.
The cooling and electrical systems have been up-rated accordingly, while the interior features Elliott electronic tachometer, correct period speedometer, 6-point bolt-in roll cage with door bars (MSA certificated), FIA-approved OMP driver’s seat and Willans 4-point harnesses. The car’s weight with 20 litres of fuel is stated as 752kg.
Eligible for a wide variety of historic sports car events, and a potential class winner in the right hands, this well-prepared and road-legal Grantura is offered with old US title deed, MoT to September 2007, Swansea V5C registration document and FIA Historic Technical Passport (HTP) number ‘GB /5882’.
