Footnotes

  • Doug Smith purchased this MGB roadster, it is believed from its first owner, in the late 1990s with the intention of converting it for racing. As far as is known the car has not been re-shelled as it had always been dry stored and used only sparingly by its original owner. Following conversion by Doug Smith the ‘B’ was sold to well known historic racers Stephen and Joey Beale in 2001. The current owner purchased the car from Stephen in 2006 and is offering it for sale following his relocation to Australia.
While in Stephen’s ownership the car was looked after by Mark Lewis, a former employee of Pearson’s and the Mercedes DTM team, and copies of his invoices for this work are included. In addition, the engine was rebuilt by Ray Buckley (also of Pearson fame) early in 2006 immediately prior to the car’s purchase by the vendor. Since then ‘GYH 84C’ has seen very little action: a mere three track outings including two test sessions and a race at the Silverstone Classic meeting where it successfully fended off a Ferrari 275GTB and a 250SWB. While in current ownership the car has been prepared at Classic Performance Engineering by Martin Greaves, requiring little more than fresh brake pads and an oil change.
Inspected and approved, ‘GYH 84C’ comes with 2004 FIA papers and Swansea V5 registration document, while new HTP papers are on the way. The most recent MoT certificate and road fund licence both expired in April 2006. The engine is modified within FIA rules and the gearbox is a four-speed straight-cut unit. A full FIA-legal six-point roll cage is fitted together with plumbed-in fire extinguisher, Ridgard seat and Willans five-point 3” harness. The car is offered complete with factory hardtop, anti-roll bar system designed by Mark Lewis, and two sets of five Minilite wheels: one set shod with Dunlop L2s the other with Dunlop Formula Rs.
The vendor advises us that the ‘B’ is immense fun to drive and ‘novice friendly’. It is eligible for many race series and, being well prepared and presented, is one of the few MGBs that are welcomed by the Gentleman Driver Series. The fact that it lined up on the Silverstone grid alongside hand-built exotica worth a king’s ransom and yet was able to beat them shows that one need not spend a fortune to enjoy historic sports car racing.
