PROVENANCE: Sale, Christie's London, 10 July 1998, lot 237
Compagno's penchant for small figures grouped in complex compositional structures was derived from his early training in Rome, where he came under the influence of the late Mannerist tradition of Cavaliere d'Arpino and Gaspare Celio; while the wide vistas and low horizons that characterise the landscape elements in his compositions have been seen to suggest the influence of northern European landscape painters, such as Goffredo Wals, who worked in Naples during the first decade of the seventeenth century.
