The ex-works, Jack Williams, ISDT Trophy Team
1948 Norton 500cc Manx
Registration no. JOC 979
Frame no. C11M 17811
Engine no. 24275
First registered in 1948 by Norton Motors, this historic Manx was ridden by pre-war TT star Jack Williams in that year’s International Six Days Trial held at San Remo, Italy, where ‘The Cheltenham Flyer’ gained a Gold Medal as a member of Britain’s victorious Trophy Team that also included Vic Brittain, Allan Jefferies, Charlie Rogers and Hugh Viney.
One of motorcycle sport’s great all-rounders of the 1930s and 1940s, Jack Williams competed in trials, scrambles and road racing. He took part in the first Manx Grand Prix in 1930 (the event had been called the Amateur TT until then), finishing in a creditable 7th place in the Senior event on a Norton, before switching to the TT the following year, his best result in that event being 5th place in the 1935 Lightweight race riding a Rudge. But it was in trials that Jack Williams excelled; as early as 1929 he formed part of Britain’s ISDT squad, helping secure the Manufacturers’ Team Prize for Rudge, which was merely the start of a remarkable run of successes in that most arduous event that continued after he switched to Norton.

Following its successful debut in the ’48 ISDT, ‘JOC 979’ was returned to full race specification in 1949 and fitted with an Elektron-case motor supplied to Harold Daniell for one of his riders, Ted Frost. Edwin Norman Frost (known as ‘Ted’) rode Daniell’s Norton in the late 1940s as well as competing in scrambles and car trials. Owner of Halfway Garage in Epsom, Surrey and founder of the Jet oil/petroleum company, he died in 1954.
Restored in 1996, the machine was purchased by the current owner in 1997 from Keith W Lloyd, of Malvern. Presented in ‘ready to race’ condition, it is offered with a quantity of related (copy) press cuttings from the 1930 and 1940s, Norton Owners Club dating certificate and Swansea V5 registration document.
