Restored in 2005, this expertly crafted exact replica of Joey Dunlop’s successful 1992 Honda RS125 was commissioned by the private collector who owns the original and is correct in every detail. On the original, Joey won the 1992 Ultra-Lightweight TT on the Isle of Man to equal Mike Hailwood’s record total of 14 TT victories. It was an historic race for other reasons, as Joey’s winning race average of 106.49mph was not only a new record but faster than Mike-the-Bike’s speed on the 500 Honda four in the 1967 Senior race! The 1992 race itself was an epic confrontation between Joey and younger brother Robert, who had won the Ultra-Lightweight TT for the preceding three years. Joey had yet to ‘break his duck’ in the class and was determined to set the record straight. He led from the start, Robert trailing close behind him, with no one else in the hunt. Robert had closed to within 0.2 seconds at the pit stops, only for Joey to pull out a further 7.4 seconds on lap three. Both Dunlop brothers lapped at over 108mph on the final (fourth) lap with Joey marginally quicker at 108.69 mph (lopping a staggering 23.2 seconds off the existing lap record for the class) and he came home with 8.4 seconds in hand.
The RS125 had already provided Joey with a win at Aghadowey plus further podium places at Tandragee, Cookstown and the North West 200, to which he had added victory at the Ulster Grand Prix by the season’s end. Presented in very good condition throughout, this particular machine represents an exciting opportunity to acquire a brilliantly executed replica of Joey Dunlop’s historic original.
