Since racing began, the ‘race-replica’ motor cycle has always been a favourite with the sporting rider and manufacturers have always catered for this niche market by producing race-kitted road versions of their bikes. In most cases, the appearance was all that there was, since race engineering was rarely suitable for sustained road use. The technical expertise of the major Japanese makers changed all that and with street fashion dictating race style from the ‘eighties on, very powerful machines, tractable enough for the road, have become the norm. As usual, though, another quantum leap has taken place and, following the immense success of the World Superbike Series, both Honda and Yamaha, as here, made close replicas of their track bikes, machines that, while being in every way suitable for road use, were also capable of being raced with success in more or less unchanged form. This rare and exotic OW01 Yamaha is one such ‘homologation special’. Unlike the replicas of other makers, the OW01 came with most everything needed to take to the track and its 1989 price of over £12,000 ($ 24,000 approx.) was an indication of that. A race Deltabox frame with 43mm diameter forks and Ohlins rear end, both fully adjustable for damping, ride-height and pre-load, allied to magnesium four-pots and huge discs all took care of the handling. The ultra-short-stroke, five valve per cylinder motor was built partly of titanium with race Mikuni 38mm carbs and produced over 120 bhp at the wheels, the EXUP exhaust-valve system ensuring that this sort of power could be deployed in either road or race mode. A careful look at this machine will reveal standards of equipment and design which remain state of the art nearly twenty years on. Naturally, this colossus was highly successful at both national and international level resulting in the fewer than 500 made becoming almost extinct in other than well-used form. Imported new and unused, in absolutely pristine condition and showing a test distance of 4Km, this Yamaha OW01 must be one of the last, if not the last, to surface and represents a rare opportunity indeed. All duties are paid and title and excise papers are present, of course.
