1928/48 Douglas/Triumph 500cc ‘The LB Special’
Engine no. EL721
If ever a machine represented both enthusiasm of rider and the mechanical genius of its creator and the fashion in the years either side of the Second World War for developing hybrid racing machines in private workshops, the LB Special must surely truly represent such a machine. It is indeed a racing workhorse and warrier which has proved highly effective, front-running in competition over many years.

The LB Special is constructed around a standard c.1928 Douglas 496cc long-stroke engine with bore of 62 1/4mm and stroke of 82mm. This originally standard Douglas engine has been highly developed with the fitting of a new crankshaft, conrods, valves and pistons, all prepared to racing specification. Transmission is through a c.1933 Norton four-speed gearbox, Norton front forks and front brake are fitted and the back wheel is Douglas. The frame is a close copy of a Douglas frame but significantly lighter. It was commissioned by Len Broomfield (LB) and built at Triumph by his brother who worked in the competition shop at Triumph in the 1930’s/40’s – hence the Triumph connection. The LB Special has been in the present ownership for over thirty years and was progressively developed and actively campaigned by Colin Clifford until about ten years ago. Last time out it was raced at Cadwell Park, ridden by Paul Gibbs, winning both of its races. During Colin Clifford’s ownership it was hill climbed, raced and sprinted with great success at all the major venues, earning affection and esteem for its consistent winning ways in the hands of a spirited and determined rider/engineer. With careful recommissioning this historic racing machine, well known in vintage circles, will be well placed to return to its winning ways on the track.
