1929 BSA 174cc Model A29
Registration no. TR 9161
Frame no. Y1221
Engine no. E1501
The Bantam of its day, BSA’s Model A arrived for 1928 as the ‘A28’. Positioned at the bottom of the range below the 250cc sidevalve-engined Model B, the newcomer was powered by a 174cc two-stroke single of unconventional design featuring primary drive by gears to the in-unit two-speed gearbox, and a right-hand side clutch. In 1928 it cost £28 10s without lights, undercutting the Model B by more than £9. A three-speed model was soon added to the range, but BSA’s first two-stroke motorcycle did not last very long, unlike the post-war Bantam, and was not offered after 1930. Acquired by Bob Berrow in 1983, this example comes with a quantity of additional spare parts and Swansea V5C registration document. Incomplete and offered for restoration, the machine is sold strictly as viewed.
