1902 Peugeot Perfecta 208cc
Registration no. BS 8386
Frame no. 12338
Engine no. 160
One of the pioneering firms of the French motorcycle industry, Peugeot followed the familiar progression, first adding proprietary clip-on engines to its bicycles before building complete machines of its own manufacture. The first Peugeot was manufactured in 1882; at this time the firm was known as Peugeot Frères but, as more family members joined, later changed its name to Les Fils de Peugeot Frères. The works Peugeots were a dominant force in racing in the years immediately before and after WWI, thanks to a succession of innovative overhead-camshaft designs by Jean Antoinescu. A wide range of machines was manufactured between the wars, but after WW2 the firm concentrated mainly on the manufacture of two-stroke lightweights, mopeds and, following the Italian lead, scooters. Dating from its manufacturer’s ‘Peugeot Frères’ period, this early Veteran consists of a Peugeot bicycle fitted with a ‘clip-on’ Perfecta engine equipped with Longuemare spray carburettor and coil ignition. It was purchased from a dealer in Holland in 2003 in derelict condition, having been acquired by them from a collection in France. Completely yet sympathetically restored, this belt driven ‘single-speeder’ has completed two Pioneer and two Banbury Runs, and been ‘clocked’ at 32mph with a 17-stone rider aboard! Described by the private vendor as ‘good and reliable’, the machine has been ridden by him from Oswestry to Anglesey along the old A5 through Capel Curig (a distance of approximately 100 miles) only needing a push at the steep Swallow Falls section. Wonderfully redolent of motorcycling’s heroic early days, this charming Edwardian is offered with Sunbeam Motor Cycle Club Pioneer Certificate (no. 1664) and Swansea V5C registration document.
