Footnotes

  • Empress Elizabeth of Austria, born Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria was considered the Princess Diana of her day. Known as Sisi by her family and friends, she married Franz Joseph, Emperor of Austria on 24 April 1854 and supposedly regretted it for the rest of her life. After the birth of their second child the marriage started to deteriorate and Sisi's behaviour became increasingly erratic. She embarked on a life of travel and became renowned for her beauty, style, reputed lovers and diet and exercise regime. She took great care of her appearance and maintaining her 20-inch waist reduced her to near emaciation at times (symptoms now recognised as anorexia).
In 1889 her only son and his wife were found dead, apparently through suicide, Sisi never fully recovered from this.
Sisi died in 1898, apparently stabbed to death by an Italian anarchist as she was walking along the shore of Lake Geneva.
