Surmounted by a gilt facetted handle centred by a foliate bud, on a shallow caddy and plain moulded cornice over repousse pierced brass mounts, the sides with rectangular glazed panels on a moulded base with later brass ogee bracket feet, the 6.5 inch square brass dial bordered with a single engraved line broken only by a strike/not strike lever above the later silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, with winged cherubs head spandrels and a finely matted centre with chamfered date aperture, the movement with six knopped and ringed pillars with verge escapement on a knife edge, rack striking on a bell, the backplate with foliate scrolls and flowerheads centred by a shaped signature cartouche 38cm (15in) high.

  • William Speakman was apprenticed to Peter Closon (see lot 172) and obtained his Freedom in 1661. He was Master of the Clockmakers Company in 1701. He is known to have worked in Westminster and later in Hatton Garden.
