Square topped hood(re built) with barley twist columns over a convex throat moulding, long trunk door with ebonised moulded edge and oval brass lenticle, the five panels of marquetry within boxwood borders and on ebonised grounds depicting finches within foliage and scrolls, the 11 inch square brass dial with winged cherubs head spandrels interspersed by engraved foliage, signed low on the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, the finely matted centre with ringed winding squares, decorated chamfered date aperture and applied subsidiary seconds with a rose-engraved boss to the centre, the movement with high-set barrels and anchor escapement with outside countwheel strike on a bell 2.1m (6ft 11in) high.

  • John Norcott paid quaterage to the Clockmakers Company from 1672 but did not obtain his Freedom until April 1681. He died in 1697 or 98. An exceptional month duration walnut longcase clock by him with skeletonised dial was sold in these rooms, 13th December 2005, lot 153.
