London, New Bond Street

A late 19th century ebonised 'Royal Polytechnic' barometer
Joseph Somalvico & Co.
Pointed top over a glazed circular hood revealing the silvered card dial with twin pointers to the very large bored tube, the rectangular trunk with applied printed remarks for rising and falling 1.04m (3ft 5in) high.

Footnotes

  • The Royal Polytechnic barometer was made in England solely by Joseph Davis and Co of 'Royal Polytechnic Institution, Kennington Park Road, London between 1870 and 1885. Their great selling point is that on moving the small brass pointer level with the mercury, the larger pointer is automatically moved to the printed scale of forthcoming weather predictions. A pair of pointers is given so that a comparison can be made with the last reading so as to give a rising or falling prediction.
