Footnotes

  • The name "Explorer" was registered in Geneva on the 26th of January 1953, The same year members of the successful Everest expedition were issued Rolex watches and the watch, worn by Tenzing Norgay, is now in the Rolex Museum in Geneva. The reference 6150 was made from 1953 until 1959 when it was replaced by the 6610, which appears identical, but in fact can be identified by its flatter back. The newer 1030 calibre movement used in the 6610 means the dials were signed "Chronometer. " The early Explorers are printed in gold on the minute track, the Rolex logo and the model name. The 1016 Explorer was the longest running of all the models, being in production from 1963 right through to 1989.
