Tassuduque Sohail (Pakistan, b. 1930) A prince reciting poetry, accompanied by courtiers
oil on canvas, framed 66 x 51 cm.
Footnotes
Provenance: Mr. Nawab Ameer Temour.
If the Mughals were renowned for their obsessions with gardens, they were equally well-known for their passion for poetry. A nobleman's education was not complete if it did not prepare him to appreciate fine verse. As a sign of cultivation, he was even expected to compose and recite it skilfully. This charming work portrays a young prince walking in a well-manicured garden accompanied by four courtiers. He is holding a book of verse, which he may well have penned himself, and is reciting from it. We can tell he is doing so because the fourth member of his audience is shushing the other three into silence by placing his right index finger upon his lips, as if he is saying to them, 'Listen carefully'. For good measure, Sohail adds a pair of kites in the blue sky and a cat chasing a bird on the ground.
