Footnotes

  • Provenance:
    Mr. Nawab Ameer Temour.

In this rather unusually large canvas for Sohail, several episodes unfold themselves simultaneously at several different levels. It is a tapestry rich in scenes and situations, seemingly unrelated to each other, but crafted carefully so to make it all the more tantalising. On the top left section, a cleric sits cross-legged in a garden, meditating, as another is seen walking away. In the background, a white serpent has coiled itself around the voluminous trunk of a tree whilst a cat is seen contemplating an empty drinking vessel in the foreground. A kitten gingerly walks across the parapet of a doorway opening to a flower or fruit tree in bloom under which two young maidens take the scented air.

The narrative moves on, sideways and underneath, where a variety of amusing and enigmatic activities are taking place. A whole family presents itself, next to which a pool of water appears complete with frolicking ducks. Then we perceive a few mullahs looking curiously at the viewer from a chequered carpet. The pageant below them contains a fruit-seller, a musician...and two gentlemen engaged in conversation of a serious nature...and so on.

The most endearing beings featured in this densely populated painting are the two Chagall-like creatures in its middle who look as bemused at the goings on as perhaps does the beholder of this work.
