Footnotes

  • A Pennington flower pot dated 1780, also decorated with a scroll-edged scene of sailing ships was in the Watney Collection, part III, lot 698. An interesting article on known artists and decorators painting ship portraits on Liverpool wares was published by Bernard Watney, ECC Trans. Vol 15, pt 1, 'William Jackson of Liverpool', pp 122-133. Leghorn was the archaic English name for the important port and trading centre of Livorno in Italy. The Skinners and Glovers Companies have traditionally been closely associated and were often amalgamated outside London. It is possible Robert Newill was a Master of one such amalgamated branch in the north of England.
