Footnotes

  • Provenance: the Rous Lench collection, Christie's, 30 May 1990, lot 509. Exhibited Worcester Bicentenary Exhibition 1951 and illustrated by Rissik Marshall (1952), fig 850. Also illustrated by Barrett (1963), pl. 28. A Worcester tea service of this pattern survived at Pitchford Hall Shropshire bearing the arms of the Beauville family. In this set the shapes were all in the Meissen style and included a Continental style ecuelle, the porcelain apparently much earlier in date than the decoration. Sandon (1993), p. 275 illustrates a bowl of the same pattern, also decorated in the early 1760s on a shape from the previous decade. The decoration on this important Dutch Jug is copied from early Meissen and it would appear that here again Worcester have used a Continental shape from the late 1750s and have decorated this perhaps five years later
