Lot 210
A interesting Worcester dessert plate
circa 1770

Sold for £ 696 (US$ 980) inc. premium
A interesting Worcester dessert plate
circa 1770
With a shaped rim in Meissen style, printed in puce and overpainted in bright enamels with scenes of figures amongst classical ruins, reserved within gilded borders on a scale blue ground, smaller panels of painted florets just inside the rim, 22.6cm diam, square mark (some slight surface wear only)

Footnotes

  • The origin of the decoration on this plate is somewhat puzzling. The scale blue ground and printed landscapes must surely have been applied at the Worcester factory. However, the gilded borders around the panels show strong similarities with those found on pieces with undoubted Giles enamelling. See the spoon tray illustrated by Hanscombe (2005), fig 21 and also fig 115 for another plate similar to the present lot. If it is therefore assumed that the colouring in of the prints and the gilding was done at the Giles workshop, it is puzzling that we do not see the hand of a recognised Giles artist on the flower sprigs painted below the rim
