Footnotes

  • Provenance: the Rous Lench collection, Christie's, 30 May 1990, lot 454. Three bell shaped mugs with identical decoration are recorded, each inscribed on the base E x L 1754. One of these from the Grant Dixon collection is at Ampleforth Abbey. Another is in the V and A. The third is at Colonial Williamsburg. See Sandon (1993), p. 68 and Clarke (1987), pl 8.. A water bottle and basin, also from the Rous Lench collection is now in the Museum of Worcester Porcelain. In each case the design is drawn with particular care. A vase of this shape features in the rococo ornament decorating the price list of Worcester’s London warehouse, circa 1754-55, see Sandon (1993), p. 223. The treatment of the enamelling and the composition should be compared with the smaller vase in the R David Butti collection, 10 May 2006, lot 33
