Sold for £ 12,960 (US$ 18,304) inc. premium
An important Worcester dish

Of lobed circular shape mirrored by a moulded panel in the centre, painted by Jefferyes Hamett O'Neale with the fable of the Horse and the Loaded Ass, the animals passing each other on a muddy road, surrounded by four panels of buildings in extensive rural landscapes, reserved on a scale blue ground within fine gilt scrolled borders, groups of colourful insects painted below the rim, 25cm diam, square mark (some wear to the moulded highlights and scratches to central panel)

Footnotes

  • Provenance: Sotheby's 19 February 1991, lot 300. This dish matches a service that was in the Heathcote collection sold in 1947, when four pear-shaped dishes and two pairs of circular dishes were offered. All had central fable subjects although the border panels varied. These are listed in detail by Rissik Marshall (1954), pp 46-47. Curiously, no plates matching this remarkable decoration have been recorded. One pair of dishes from the Heathcote sale were of the same shape and size as the present lot. These were subsequently in the Parkinson collection and illustrated by Mackenna (1950), fig. 134. One of these was subsequently in the R David Butti collection, sold in these rooms 10 May 2006, lot 73. The other is at Colonial Williamsburg, illustrated by Clarke (1987), pl. 16
