Footnotes

  • The style of costume worn by the present sitter suggests that he is more likely to have been a Frenchman than an Englishman. It is therefore probable that the portrait was painted on one of Hilliard's trips to France in the second half of the 1570s when he and his new wife Alice Brandon travelled in the entourage of the English Ambassador, Sir Amyas Paulet. Whilst in France, Hilliard entered the household of François, duc d'Alençon, suitor of Elizabeth I. It is thought that he also temporarily set up a workshop in Paris as he is recorded in the goldsmith's records for that town at this time.
