Footnotes

  • Provenance
By family tradition, this tiara belonged to the Hon. Georgiana Eliza Stuart (1821-1904), third daughter of Robert Walter Stuart, eleventh Lord Blantyre and second wife of the distinguished 19th century diplomat, Sir Andrew Buchanan, 1st Bt.
By descent to the current owner.

In antiquity, the evergreen shurb, myrtle, was an attribute of Venus and her handmaidens, the Three Graces. From the Renaissance, it came to symbolise everlasting love and conjugal fidelity. The motif was revived in neo-classical tiaras of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Cf: Bunkamura Museum of Art, Tiara, Dignity and Beauty, The Story of the Tiara, 2007, plate 5, for a tiara of similar age and design.
