Footnotes

  • "EDMUND BURKE & JANE NUGENT MARRIED THE 12TH OF MARCH 1757": BURKE’S FAMILY BIBLE, recording his marriage, and the birth of two sons (the second of whom was to die in infancy). This Bible is the one referred to by Sir Philip Magnus, cited by him as definitive evidence of the circumstances of Burke's marriage to Jane Nugent, daughter of the Roman Catholic doctor who had treated him at Bath. After Jane Burke's death it was to pass to her niece, Lucy Nugent, and from her to Burke's collateral descendants Isaac Moreton Wood and the Pixley family (Edmund Burke: A Prophet of the Eighteenth Century, 1939, p.307 n.26). Included in the lot are letters to the owner by the Burke scholar Elizabeth R. Lambert. See illustration overleaf.
