A dated second quarter 17th Century cast iron fire back
Of ogee-arched form with English rose, Scottish thistle and French fleur-de-lys motifs above a lion passant guardant flanked by date 1641 and initials 'IM', 79cmcm wide, 70.5cm high
Footnotes
For a similar example dated 1649 and with matching initials see Lindsay J Seymour: Iron and Brass Implements of the English House, Alec Tiranti, 1970, p.10 and fig.23. On page 10, Lindsay asserts that the symbolism commemorates the death of Charles I in that year - however, our example would pre-date this event by eight years.
