A Highly Important Collection of 116 Watercolour Drawings Depicting The Standards Of Six Cavalry Regiments Of The Line, The Three Regiments Of Foot Guards, And Thirteen Infantry Regiments Of The Line.
The cavalry and line infantry regiments are headed by the then Royal and/or Colonel's name, the individual colours of the senior officers of each regiment are shown, in the Foot Guards all company colours are depicted, the collection is painted on folio laid paper, each page bearing the water mark of the Royal Crown over an ornate fleur-de-lys, the heading style of writing and occasional artists footnotes suggest the work is near contemporary, e.g. the pencil notes to that of the First Regiment of Foot Guards, King's Coy, King Charles reads 'King's first regiment of Guards Old Colour in the late King's time', in the 19th Century the collection was half-bound in red grained moroccan by Messrs H.C Treacer The Royal Library, Brighton, probably at the behest of Walter John Pelham, 4th Earl of Chichester, he in turn gifted the work to one Henry Charles Lane, the flyleaf is inscribed 'Henry C Lane with best wishes fr Chichester May 88' the inner front cover bears the book plate of Henry Charles Lane. Some slight foxing and staining to some of the pages, and one small cigarette burn to that of the VIIIth Company 1st Regt of Foot Guards, otherwise good condition.
