Footnotes

  • Rock Sand, foaled in 1900, was by Sainfoin out of Roquebrune. Bred and owned by Sir James Miller, he was trained at Newmarket by George Blackwell, and generally ridden by the American jockey, Danny Maher. He was very successful as a two year old, winning six of his seven starts, and won the Triple Crown as a three year old. Always a bad mover at slow pace, as he went down to the start of the Derby in 1903 an American remarked to his trainer "I suppose you know your horse is lame?", to which Blackwell replied "Oh, you've noticed that have you? I think he has a chance, all the same". He won the race by two lengths at 6/4 on. He was sold to stud in America in 1906, being bought by the President of the American Jockey Club for £25,000, and later died in France in 1914.
