Footnotes

  • Jules Genisson was born in Saint-Omer in 1805. He studied at the Academie in Anvers with van Brée and travelled extensively in Europe, in particular in France, Germany and Italy and was clearly in England by 1851.
    Genisson specialised in cathedral interiors and views of churches and convents and was working in the tradition of the many Northern European artists, who had celebrated these magnificent buildings for many years. Genisson would have been familiar with the work of Samuel van Hoogstratten who had painted the Abbey in the 17th century.

    The present church was begun by Henry III in 1245 and has been the coronation church since 1066. A tradition of daily worship started by the Beneddictine monks in the tenth century continues to this day. It is regarded as one of the most important Gothic buildings in the country.
