Footnotes

  • As a London caricaturist, like his father before him, George Cruikshank drew his inspiration from the tempestuous political period of the early nineteenth century. During his early career many prominent political figures such as Lord Castlereagh and Lord Sidmouth, as well as members of the Royal family, became the victims of his artistic satire. After the atrocities of the Peterloo Massacre in 1819, Cruikshank became politically motivated and produced a number of pamphlets in conjunction with the Radical publisher and bookseller William Hone.

After 1820 the artist became more interested in theatrical subjects and in 1836 joined forces with Charles Dickens to produce the illustrations for 'Sketches by Boz' (1836) and 'Oliver Twist' (1838).
The illustrated painting is a good example of the theatrical caricature that caught his imagination.

Later in life Cruikshank became a strong supporter of the Temperance Society and in 1847 produced 'The Bottle' which was to sell over 100,000 copies. He died on 1st February 1878.
