Footnotes

  • In his observation of their daily life, Jean Béraud was highly successful at creating an image of fashionable Parisian women at the turn of the century.

During the 1890s Béraud modified his Naturalist style to create religious compositions. The symbolic implications of these particular works provoked considerable discussion among contemporary critics. Nevertheless these compositions are testimonies of the religious habits of the time. They are also records of Beraud's continued interest in Naturalism.

Highly regarded as expressions of intense sentiment, these religious themes form an important part of his observations of fin de siecle Paris society.

He chooses to depict his subject in contemporary dress, and the French aristocracy, who were his clients, were more than satisfied with his superficial representations of reality.

In the present lot, instead of a study of individuals attending church, Béraud shows us a scene of a Sunday Mass crowded with people on their knees, praying.

The sunlight, filtered through the stained-glass window, the play of light and shadows that so much interested the artist, adds certain dramatic touch to the scene.

A version of this composition, pastel on paper, is listed in the Catalogue Raisonné by Patrick Offenstadt as The Elevation of the Host, no. 322, p.243, illustrated.

We are very grateful to Patrick Offenstadt who has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work.
