A Rare Italian Broadsword With Brass-Inlaid Hilt
Circa 1560
With broad straight double-edged two-stage blade of flattened diamond section with shallow double fuller on each face at the forte, changing to hollow ground flattened diamond section for the rest of its length beyond, rectangular ricasso struck on each face with the Toledo mark within an incised linear border interrupted by groups of small stars, iron hilt comprising guard of flattened triangular section with sharply forward-curved quillons with down-turned pointed ends, and downbent arms with the ends linked to an oval side-ring on the outside, fig-shaped pommel with turned button, and baluster-shaped grip with narrow central recessed moulding, inlaid throughout in brass with fine arabesque foliage against a dotted ground, framing, on the grip, two Classical armoured figures against a dotted ground (minor losses of inlay, some wear)
94.5 cm. blade

Footnotes

  • The hilt of this sword, apart from the unusual, strongly in-curved quillons relates closely to those on a small group of swords and daggers ascribed to an unidentified Milanese workshop. The swords, one with a dagger en suite, are in the Hofjagd-und Rüstkammer, Vienna (Nos. A790, 794, 795), and a third is in the Wallace Collection (A509). Highly unusual, and possibly unique, is the fact that the inlays on the hilt are in brass and not precious metal
