    Extract from the Record of Service 2nd Battn Manchester Regt 15th Nov 1900.

    "At Standerston a convoy of supplies was taken over and the return march to Vrede commenced on the 15th Nov 1900. On the 16th the enemy attacked the left flank and F.Coy became hotly engaged (under Capt Noble) without any shelter, they held the enemy in check until they retired to cover one by one. During the time that F.Coy was under the enemys fire, the following NCO and man behaved with great coolness and courage. The NCO thrice volunteered to bring in two men who were unable to rejoin the Company but was not allowed to, as it was believed at the time that the men had been killed. Both names were submitted to the Lieut. General commanding the division."

    He enlisted into the Manchester Regiment 22.10.1890, transferred to Army Reserve 22.10.1897, recalled to colours 26.10.1899, discharged on termination of engagement 21.10.1902. Served in South Africa 16.3.1900-20.8.1902.

    He served with 2nd Manchester Regiment, A0 15/02; surname was corrected from Harris L.G.20.11.1903, p.7141.

    A total of 27 DCMs were awarded to the Manchesters during the Boer War.
