Footnotes

  • Ex-B.M. Thomas Collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The border of this manta is illustrated in Mera, Plate XIX, the third drawing from the top. The stylized medallion of this manta is illustrated in Mera, Plate XXVI, the right-hand drawing. Mera made both drawings in Santa Fe, New Mexico, during the 1940’s when this manta was in the collection of B.M. Thomas.

See Kent, Plate 14, and the cover illustration, for An Embroidered Manta, Acoma, circa 1850, with floral motifs, which extend from its upper and lower borders into its center. The Acoma manta illustrated in Kent is in the collection of the School of American Research in Santa Fe, New Mexico (#SAR T122).

See Mera, page 72, for remarks concerning the only other known instance of a medallion design at the center of an Acoma manta. The other manta cited by Mera is in the collection of the American Museum of Natural History in New York, New York, and has not been illustrated.

"Embroidered Acoma mantas are generally considered to be the rarest and most desirable category of Pueblo wearing blankets. Approximately thirty-five embroidered Acoma mantas exist in museums and private hands (see Conn and Wheat, page 14). Of those embroidered mantas, this manta is one of two dark-field examples featuring embroidery at its center, and is the only known example in private hands. With these factors in mind, this Acoma manta can be characterized as a unique example of what is arguably the rarest and most desirable category of Pueblo wearing blanket. Along with the Acoma manta illustrated here as Fig. 37 (Pueblo Treasures), this Acoma manta qualifies as a candidate for the finest known example of its type." -J.S.
