Footnotes

  • Ex-Morning Star Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico.

See Frank and Harlow, Fig. 131, for A Polychrome Olla, Acoma Pueblo, circa 1890, with heartline deer pictorials. The Acoma olla illustrated in Frank and Harlow is in the collection of the Museum of New Mexico in Santa Fe, New Mexico (#12068/12).

See Harlow, Two Hundred Years of Historic Pueblo Pottery: The Gallegos Collection, Plate 22, for A Polychrome Olla, Acoma, circa 1900, with parrot and heartline deer pictorials.

“Black-edged-red rainbow arcs are depicted at Acoma Pueblo with a variety of stylistic variations. The classic form at both Acoma and Zia is shown in Figs. 9 and 18 (Pueblo Treasure), in which the arcs undulate around the circumference in continuous pathways without interruption or angular bends. On this beautiful jar, the single path is continuous but has angular corners, much as occurs in Fig. 3. In some examples the rainbow arcs are depicted in isolated segments, as in Fig. 24 and 7; in some the pathways have various forms of attached branches, as in Fig. 27. Double rainbow arcs are more common than the single one shown on this jar, the one in Fig. 18, and with complex embellishments on the jar in Fig. 27. The significance of these variations is uncertain; they may simply reflect the ideas associated with the particular artist. There are some interesting similarities between this jar and the one illustrated in Fig. 1. On both examples the deer (or elk) is oriented in an uphill stance; each has a tongue (a red one in the black animal and a black one in the red animal); they both have heart lines from mouth to the middle of the body; and the feet are all of the standard Zuni style, with two long toes, one above the other. In addition the jars have similar form. The parrots on this jar are not exactly the same as those of any other of the jars in this folio; indeed every one of them is slightly different from all the others. An interesting feature on this jar is seen in the triangular figures attached to the underside of the rainbow arc. The cross-hatching lines within the triangles overlap at the vertices, in a style that is especially characteristic of the decorations at Zia Pueblo just after 1900.” -F.H.H.
