1911 Ford Model T Open Runabout
Chassis no. tba
Henry’s Model T Ford was an all new model introduced in 1908 and remained in production until 1927, by which time some 15 million owners had bought new Model T Fords, either in car or light commercial form. Although the butt of music hall jokes, the Model T was made of the best materials, Vanadium steel providing both lightness and strength throughout, the four cylinder engine proving powerful and reliable and, once mastered, the planetary gearbox, operated by two pedals and two levers, was simplicity itself. Mass production techniques, in which Ford led the way, saw the assembly time for a Ford Model T reduced to a record-breaking 1 ½ hours by 1911. The Model T boasts 45 mph performance and 25mpg fuel economy with remarkable flexibility and hill-climbing performance on top gear.

Two new body styles were announced for the 1911 season, the Open Runabout and the Torpedo Runabout, both two seaters of more sporting appeal, the principal difference being the passenger doors fitted to the Torpedo model. In both cases the gas tank was located on the rear deck. Surviving Open Runabouts are comparatively rare.

This car, originally from the West Coast, was discovered in Seattle and has been the subject of extensive restoration as closely as possible to original specification. It enjoys the added benefits of the Ruxtell two speed axle and a Ford factory electric starter has been fitted. A high compression alumnium cylinder head contributes to enhanced performance.

The original coachwork is presented in Midnight Blue livery with grey pin-striping and furnished with black, diamond-buttoned leather upholstery. Comprehensive weather equipment is provided by the two man folding top and occasional side curtains. Driving equipment includes Firestone ‘Non Skid’ tires, brass E&J acetylene headlamps and matching kerosene side and tail lamps, a running board mounted acetylene generator and a double twist bulb horn.

This early Model T will, we are told, be equally at home on the ‘brass and gas’ tour or the concours d’elegance lawn.
