Lot Details
Group of Four Opalized Clam Shells
Coober Pedy, Australia
Over 100 million years ago, most of the Australian continent was under water. Highly concentrated with silicate and other opal-producing minerals, the water frequently produced a phenomenon of opal replacement of fossil clams, fossil belemnites, etc. The present group of four specimens are opalized clam shells which have been smooth polished on one side to reveal an excellent play-of-fire with pinpoint flashes of blue, green, red and orange. One of the clam shells exhibits exhibits purple and green flashes within a jelly opal body. The reverse side of each is equally interesting in that it shows the original surface texture of the clam shell. (4) Weighing 98.0 carats, 59.0 carats, 23.0 carats, 19.5 carats respectively.
