Opalized Shell Plate
Eyrena tatei, Cyrenopsis australiensis, Cyrenopsis meeki
Bulldog Shale, Aptian, Early Cretaceous,
Coober Pedy, South Australia State, Australia

This extraordinary natural assemblage of shells originated from a mass mortality which arose from a storm serge that covered and killed a vast carpet of clams and mussels in the Early Cretaceous of South Australia. Composed primarily of clams, the carpet would have covered a vast area of tide-level ocean floor. From the Opal Capital of the World, Coober Pedy, South Australia, the fascinating specimens exhibit delightful flashes of greens and blues arising from the shells’ opalization. A unique combination of fossil and gemstone. Measures 20 x 9 x 8in
