Footnotes

  • The carvings on the cornice and base of the upper cabinet directly reference the ornamentation of the windows in Cairo’s Mosque of Tulun (876-79), built for Ahmad ibn Tulun, the son of a Turkish slave who rose to become governor of Egypt. They are illustrated in Owen Jones’s hugely influential The Grammar of Ornament, first published in 1856, which was widely read by nineteenth century artists, designers, craftspeople and architects. The stylized floral and 'cloud' inlay faithfully reproduces similar motifs seen on Turkish Iznik pottery and inlaid furniture from the sixteenth century.
