Lot 258
CAPOTE, TRUMAN.

US$ 1,000 - 2,000
£ 790 - 1,600
CAPOTE, TRUMAN.
CAPOTE’S SEVENTH GRADE GEOGRAPHY BOOK.
Rabenort, William. Rabenort’s Geography: Asia, Africa, Australia. NY: 1924. Original tan cloth. Leaves browned at edges and generally toned, hinges cracked, covers soiled, worn and marked, spine darkened and rubbed.

Capote’s copy, signed and inscribed on the cover (“Truman”) and front flyleaf (“Truman Capote / St. John’s Military School”), “Military School” crossed out and replaced with “Bug house.” In the fall of 1936, Capote’s mother pulled him from the relative comfort of Manhattan’s Trinity School and enrolled him in St. John’s Military Academy in Ossining, NY, a life for which he was spectacularly ill-suited. Capote spent a miserable three years at St. Johns, enduring taunts and abuses from the other boys over his high-pitched drawl and effeminate manners.
In addition to his ownership signature, Capote has written “New York City … Capote / Karia” and math equations on the pastedown and flyleaf.
