Footnotes

  • Provenance: Private English collection

Similar brushwashers can be found in museum collections in Europe, America and China. All the extant examples seem to share the same fine glaze colour and texture, an unctuous glaze with a soft bluish tone which has traditionally been much prized by connoisseurs.

A slightly larger, but similarly proportioned Longquan brushwasher of this type in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, is illustrated in Porcelain of the National Palace Museum - Lung ch'uan Ware of the Sung Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1962, pg.61, pls.18 and 18a. For another even larger but less successfully proportioned example from the Qing Court collection in the Palace Museum, Beijing, see The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum -33. Porcelain of the Song Dynasty(II), Hong Kong, 1966, pg.145, no.130. The brushwasher in Beijing also has a fine bluish glaze, but with some crackle reminiscent of Guan ware.

A similar brushwasher from the collection of Robert Barron was sold Christie's New York, 30 March 2005, lot 315.
