Footnotes

  • For an identical group of dancing figures, see Rosalie Wise Sharp, Ceramics, Ethics & Scandal, p.152.

The inspiration of the pose of the group may have been the dancing couple first modelled in 1755 by Johann Friedrich Eberlein at Meissen, later copied in Jingdezhen directly from the original Meissen models. Examples of the Chinese figures on round bases following Meissen originals were found on the Geldermalsen sunk in 1752. Three are illustrated by C. Sheaf and R. Kilburn, The Hatcher Porcelain Cargoes: The Complete Record, Oxford, 1988, p.152, pl.200. The original European models would have arrived in Canton at the very latest circa 1750.
