Mosque of the Citadel, Cairo signed 'Albert Goodwin', dated 'Jany 1909/11' (lower right) and inscribed 'Mosque of the Citadel, Cairo' (lower left) watercolour over pencil 27 x 37 cm. (10½ x 14½ in.)
Footnotes
Provenance: Richard Haworth, Blackburn; Chris Beetles Ltd., London, circa 1983, purchased by the current owner.
Exhibited: 'Albert Goodwin RWS', Chris Beetles Ltd., London, 1986, no.82.
Goodwin visited Egypt in 1876 and again in 1909. The mosque of the Citadel was an inspiration on both visits, and he exhibited views of it on a number of occasions:
"Painted a memory of the Citadel, silhouetted against afterglow: a great thing to know what you want to get. The little work I have had, face to face with nature, makes all the difference. I had begun to fumble with long work - too long - indoors. Now I feel that artistic health, as well as bodily, has to some extent come back to me.
"Wednesday: Tried to get hold of some of the blue sky as seen behind minarets and mosques of Sultan Hussan. How illusive that blue is, how difficult to get it and avoid the look of paint. In evening went to the hills over Cairo and got sight of the glory of sunset and afterglow. This time I hope will bear fruit. Still rejoicing in recovered health!
"February 10th: Three weeks ago I arrived in Cairo, in very much lower spirits than I now find myself: to-morrow is my last day in Cairo. I shall be glad to get out of it, for the noise and unrest is very wearing. But for this quiet room I should be distracted. No wonder the good Mohammedan goes off to his mosque to pray; it is the only quiet place the poor man gets. It makes me long sometimes for the peace of out own land: the solemn quiet of such a place as Salisbury Close, by contrast, is most desirable."
