An American pipe tomahawk
late 18th century
One piece brass head with turned acorn shaped pipe bowl flanked by two triangular flanges. Tear drop shaped eye. Cutting edge with unusual system of inletting with two deep channels, two round balls and a small bat head. Slender tapering maple haft of tear drop section. Small bone plug in fore end of haft. Butt with two inlet grooves and a pipe channel for addition of a mouthpiece (now lost).
Condition: Brass with dark patina. Steel lightly corroded with small chips on cutting edge. Wood with numerous wear, mars, and scraping.
