Footnotes

  • This is one of the most important golf ball discoveries in recent years, coming to light in 2003, just as the definitive book on golf balls, Kevin McGimpsey's The Story of the Golf Ball had gone to print.

He now believes that this ball is unique, as no others are known to exist. It was probably made in very limited numbers to coincide with the opening in 1898 of The Minikahda Golf Club in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is also significant as it is the only known bramble ball to have been named after an American golf club or course! The word 'Minikahda' in the Sioux language means, 'By the side of water' and the Club's emblem is that of a Sioux Indian Chief.

Of course The Minikahda Golf Club is famous in its own right because the great Bobby Jones won the US Amateur there in 1927. Only one player took Jones beyond the 16th green at Minikahda. Once Jones was launched on the hunt for his third US Amateur title his progress was swift, his last three wins being 10 & 9, 11 & 10 and in the final 8 & 7 over Chick Evans!
