Lot 49
An early Worcester reeded coffee can circa 1753-4

Sold for £ 1,320 (US$ 1,830) inc. premium
An early Worcester reeded coffee can
circa 1753-4
The small, flared cup moulded with fine corrugated flutes, the rim and foot slightly lobed, the double scroll handle with slight thumbrest, painted with two budding leafy branches beneath a border of half-flowerheads, leaves and fine red scroll motifs, 5.2cm (2in) high (slight deterioration to green enamel)

Footnotes

  • Many variations of this popular pattern were painted on 'ribbed' cans at this date. The running leaf border and spreading branches on this example are somewhat unusual. Two similar cans were in the Stephen Unwin collection, Albert Amor Ltd. March 1996, figs. 4 and 5 and another is illustrated by John Sandon (1993), p. 116 top left. The price card of Worcester's London warehouse, c.1755-6, lists 'ribb'd' cans selling for 8 shillings a dozen. These would have been decorated in blue and white, which had replaced the coloured examples by the mid-1750s.
